Fortune and IBM Watson Health Recognize Top-Performing U.S. Hospitals and Health Systems

2021 Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® and 15 Top Health Systems Lists Published Today by Fortune
Annual ranking introduces first measure of hospitals’ contributions to community health with a focus on equity, developed by IBM Watson Health in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity and Bloomberg American Health Initiative at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 27, 2021 — IBM Watson Health today announced its 2021 Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® and 15 Top Health Systems award winners, naming the top-performing hospitals and health systems in the U.S. This year’s ranking of top hospitals introduces a measure of hospitals’ contributions to community health with a focus on equity, along with measures of clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health.

A team of experts at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity and the Bloomberg American Health Initiative at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, developed the measure of hospital contributions to community health with a focus on equity. For the ranking, hospitals were surveyed across three components: 1) assessing hospital contributions to community health as a provider of critical services for community health and preventive care; 2) identifying ways that hospitals contribute to community health as a community partner teaming up with local organizations to implement critical programs; and 3) focusing on ways that hospitals promote community health through their practices as anchor institutions supporting local economic and social progress. Hospitals received credit for meeting a certain number of best practice standards in each component as part of the survey scoring and the new measure led to a change in ranking for more than one-third of the 100 hospitals.

“Hospitals save lives both by caring for individuals who are sick and by working to keep their communities healthy,” said Joshua M. Sharfstein, MD, Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement and Director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “By recognizing hospital excellence in community health with a focus on equity, IBM Watson Health is helping advance the broad and urgent mission of healthcare in the twenty-first century.”

“We are proud to bring forward this first assessment of hospital contributions to community health as a way to help hospitals identify and eliminate gaps in their programs, provide equitable quality care, and address health disparities,” said Irene Dankwa-Mullan, MD, MPH, Chief Health Equity Officer and Deputy Chief Health officer at IBM Watson Health. “We believe that including a community measure as part of the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals ranking can help begin the process of change and improvement across the hospital community.”

The goal of the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals and IBM Watson Health 15 Top Health Systems lists is to identify top performing hospitals and health systems and deliver insights that may help healthcare organizations focus their improvement initiatives on achieving consistent, balanced and sustainable high performance. The studies used to determine the lists are based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics and data.

As compared to their peer health systems, the hospitals included on the IBM Watson Health 15 Top Health Systems list had better results on performance indicators intended to measure clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and patient experience. These include lower inpatient mortality rates and fewer patient complications, considering patient severity; care that resulted in fewer healthcare-associated infections; lower 30-day readmission rates; shorter lengths of stay; faster emergency care; higher scores on patient ratings of their overall hospital experience: and lower episode-of-care expenses for the in-hospital through aftercare process. Additionally, performance by these 15 health systems, when extrapolated to all Medicare inpatients, could result in:

  • Approximately 66,000 additional lives saved;
  • More than 22,000 additional patients being complication-free;
  • Healthcare-associated infections being reduced by 15 percent; and
  • Patients spending 31 fewer minutes in hospital emergency departments, per visit.

To determine the hospitals included on the IBM Watson Health 15 Top Health Systems list, IBM Watson Health researchers evaluated 324 health systems and 2,522 hospitals that are members of health systems. All research was based on the following public data sets: Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Health systems do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

Parle Products, World’s Largest Selling Biscuit Brand, Teams with IBM to Drive Growth Through Hybrid Cloud

– Parle to migrate SAP workloads to IBM Cloud to gain flexibility and scale to help meet increasing consumer needs
– Migration to bring increased levels of security to protect critical data
– IBM to work with Parle to design and manage AI-based supply chain based on IBM’s consulting and capabilities

ARMONK, N.Y., April 22, 2021 — IBM today announced that it is working with Parle Products Pvt Ltd (Parle), the largest selling biscuit brand  in India, to help it more quickly and effectively bring its products to market by leveraging IBM Cloud. Parle will leverage IBM’s transformative hybrid cloud and AI capabilities, along with its leading security and industry expertise with IBM’s business consulting and technology services. This will help Parle get its products, such as Parle-G, the world’s top-selling biscuit by volume — to market at the right time and in the right place.

By embracing a hybrid cloud-based approach, Parle expects to innovate more quickly – finding new ways to get its products into the homes of consumers, even as the global pandemic creates challenges in the supply chain and mandates that some employees work remotely. Through streamlining operations and achieving greater scalability to meet changing demands, Parle expects to witness business growth in India and beyond.

Ajay Chauhan, Executive Director, Parle Products, said, “As the largest biscuit brand provider in India, our priority is meeting the growing demands of Indian consumers. By working with IBM to accelerate our journey to the cloud and strengthen our security posture, we will work to uncover new ways to reduce time-to-market and streamline operations – a significant milestone for us.”

Parle will leverage key IBM technologies and services across hybrid cloud and AI:

  • Cloud – By migrating its mission-critical SAP workloads, ERP, supply chain, and analytics applications to IBM Cloud, Parle can boost productivity across business functions such as finance, HR, and procurement. This can also help the company meet the evolving needs of its growing ecosystem of wholesalers and retailers.
  • AI- With the intelligent AI-based supply chain, IBM will help design a critical KPIs-based performance management framework using IBM Watson Studio to measure and monitor the health of Parle’s business processes and their outcomes. Intelligent workflows will further fuel Parle’s agenda on appropriate product mix, faster planning and scheduling, and optimized supply chain costs.
  • Services – Parle will be leveraging IBM’s deep industry expertise with IBM Global Business Services (GBS) and Global Technology Services (GTS) to host its workloads on IBM Cloud.
  • Security – By leveraging IBM’s Security Operations Center (SOC) to enhance its security posture, Parle will work with IBM to design, build, and manage a comprehensive security program designed to increase its resiliency and security. The organization will also leverage IBM X-Force Red’s services to uncover vulnerabilities across applications and networks. X-Force Red will support Parle’s security teams to identify and remediate security flaws across their entire digital ecosystem.

“The global pandemic has demanded businesses to become digital overnight and quickly adjust to life in a virtual world,” said Howard Boville, Head of IBM Hybrid Cloud Platform. “Every industry has had to accelerate their transformation and are turning to the cloud to enable that. “Parle quickly shifted its approach, by embracing an hybrid cloud strategy with IBM to leverage our cloud capabilities and deep  industry expertise, with security at the forefront of their advancement. By implementing cloud and AI,  Parle is able to bring their products seamlessly to millions of homes in India, despite the current challenging times.”

IBM has a long-standing relationship with Parle, implementing and managing mission-critical ERP and other workloads. The work is designed to help Parle enhance demand sensing to increase efficiencies in production management, optimize inventory and logistics costs and bring intelligence to its sourcing activities.

IBM to Acquire myInvenio to help Organizations Use AI-powered Automation to Better Streamline Business Processes

Addition of myInvenio provides customers with a comprehensive AI-powered automation portfolio for business automation – including process mining, robotic process automation (RPA), document processing, workflow, and decisions – all built on Red Hat OpenShift

ARMONK, N.Y., April 15, 2021 — IBM today announced a definitive agreement to acquire myInvenio, a process mining software company based in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The acquisition will provide organizations with data-driven software that should help them identify the most impactful business processes to automate using AI – including sales, procurement, production and accounting. It also further advances IBM’s hybrid cloud and AI strategy, providing customers with a comprehensive suite of AI-powered automation capabilities for business automation. Financial details were not disclosed.

With the acquisition of myInvenio, IBM will help companies overcome the challenge of streamlining business processes that are cumbersome or create bottlenecks, slowing down innovation and increasing costs.

Today’s news underscores IBM’s continued investment in providing organizations with a one-stop shop of AI-powered automation capabilities for business automation, including process mining, robotic process automation (RPA) through the recent acquisition of  WDG Automation, document processing, workflow, and decisions.  All of these capabilities are tightly integrated with IBM Cloud Pak for Business Automation and powered by Red Hat OpenShift to run anywhere and help customers automate their entire enterprise.

“Digital transformation is accelerating across industries as companies face increasing challenges with managing critical IT systems and complex business applications that span the hybrid cloud landscape,” said Dinesh Nirmal, General Manager, IBM Automation. “With IBM’s planned acquisition of myInvenio, we are continuing to invest in building the industry’s most comprehensive suite of AI-powered automation capabilities for business automation so that our customers can help employees re-claim their time to focus on more strategic work.”

“Through IBM’s planned acquisition of myInvenio, we are revolutionizing the way companies manage their process operations,” said Massimiliano Delsante, CEO, myInvenio. “myInvenio’s unique capability to automatically analyze processes and create simulations — what we call a ‘Digital Twin of an Organization’ —  is joining with IBM’s AI-powered automation capabilities to better manage process execution. Together we will offer a comprehensive solution for digital process transformation and automation to help enterprises continuously transform insights into action.”

IBM’s acquisition of myInvenio builds on its OEM agreement with the company. Upon close of the acquisition, IBM has plans to integrate myInvenio’s capabilities into its Automation portfolio, including IBM Cloud Pak for Business Automation, IBM’s hybrid cloud software for using AI to transform business processes and help enable people to be more productive.

myInvenio capabilities reveal inefficiencies, bottlenecks and tasks that can benefit from automation, to help organizations significantly reduce their operating costs and improve customer service. Simulations can be run to assess automation opportunities to measure the benefits of applying automation at the outset of the automation journey. By analyzing historical process execution data and desktop behavior, myInvenio technology can help determine where to apply RPA bots, automated decisions, AI models, and other automations to have the most impact on a business.

myInvenio’s capabilities could also be available to IBM business partners and IBM Global Business Services Automation practice to assist customers to generate insights about their business processes that could help lead to a clear data-driven roadmap for applying automation effectively.

Using myInvenio’s process mining capabilities together with IBM AI-powered automation, an organization can streamline their accounts receivable process by looking at interactions with ERP and invoicing systems. The process mining software enables them to understand if employees spend a lot of time manually examining invoices and auditing purchase requests to find anomalies – two processes where AI-powered automation can help to boost efficiency and cut costs, while freeing employees to do more strategic work. Another example involves IT ticketing systems. Companies can use process mining to examine the most common IT requests and automate resolution.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions. It is expected to close at the end of this quarter.

IBM Cloud for Financial Services Accelerates Innovation with Support for Red Hat OpenShift and Other Cloud-native Services

SAP joins ecosystem of more than 90 partners and FinTechs serving financial institutions worldwide
BNP Paribas onboards workloads to IBM Cloud for Financial Services

ARMONK, N.Y., April 7, 2021 — IBM today announced that the general availability of the industry’s first financial services-ready cloud platform, IBM Cloud for Financial Services, now including support for Red Hat OpenShift and other cloud-native services. First revealed in 2019, the IBM Cloud for Financial Services was designed in collaboration with Bank of America. Since then, IBM has built a cloud environment capable of supporting the needs of the financial services industry for their mission-critical workload and data protection, with our compliance capabilities and industry-leading security1. The IBM Cloud for Financial Services is designed to help to reduce risk for financial institutions, their partners and FinTechs, and innovate quickly with built-in controls that are adhered to by the entire ecosystem.

In addition to Bank of America, IBM is working with several global financial institutions such as BNP Paribas, Luminor Bank, MUFG and more. The IBM Cloud for Financial Services is supported by an ecosystem of more than 90 collaboration partners including new additions EY and Tata Consultancy Services, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Software as a Service (SaaS) providers. As part of today’s announcement, SAP has joined the IBM Cloud for Financial Services ecosystem, giving clients a diverse set of applications to deploy via the platform.

“Together with some of the world’s largest banks and leaders in regulatory compliance we are driving a change in cloud adoption for highly regulated industries, aiming to improve the security and compliance posture for the industry,” said Howard Boville, Head of IBM Hybrid Cloud Platform. “With a focus on data security delivered with IBM’s confidential computing and sophisticated encryption capabilities, we aim to reduce risk in the supply chain for banks, insurers and other financial services industry players, and at the same time accelerating the time by which they can drive and consume innovation.”

Secured Platform Designed for Open Innovation

With the general availability of IBM Cloud for Financial Services, the financial services industry, including technology partners, can now build applications with Red Hat OpenShift, migrate virtual machine workloads, and establish compliance profiles across their workloads– to help support their continuous compliance needs. Financial services institutions can now accelerate their cloud journeys with IBM Cloud for Financial Services’ built-in security and compliance controls for both cloud-native and VMware workloads.

“We’re excited to continue our partnership with IBM to help enable financial institutions and their ecosystem partners to confidently host apps and workloads on the IBM Cloud for Financial Services using VMware infrastructure,” said Fidelma Russo, SVP and GM, Cloud Services Business Unit, VMware. “We find the platform helps demonstrate security and readiness for regulatory compliance more efficiently, can bring significant value to the financial services supply chain.”

IBM Cloud for Financial Services is built on IBM Cloud, the industry’s most secure and open cloud for business, which uses Red Hat OpenShift as its primary Kubernetes environment to manage containerized software across the enterprise, and includes more than 200 API driven, cloud native PaaS services to create new and enhanced cloud-native apps. Developer and ecosystem partners can build and modernize in a secured environment to drive innovation for today’s modern customer.

Safeguard Data with Confidential Computing

To protect data across cloud-native and VMware workloads, IBM Cloud for Financial Services uses IBM’s fourth-generation confidential computing capabilities and ‘Keep Your Own Key’ encryption delivered via IBM Hyper Protect Services and backed by the highest level of security certification commercially available1. This gives enterprises technology-backed control of their own encryption keys so clients are the only ones who can control access to their data. This same hardware-based assurance enables confidential computing, meaning that financial institutions can process critical data in a secured enclave within a shared cloud environment.

To ease cloud adoption for financial services clients IBM developed IBM Cloud for Financial Services to help address the security and regulatory requirements of the heavily regulated industry. Central to the platform is the IBM Cloud Framework for Financial Services which delivers an industry-informed set of security and compliance controls to operate securely with bank-sensitive data in the public cloud. This was developed with Bank of America and Promontory, a global leader in financial services regulatory compliance consulting, and will continue to be maintained by IBM’s Financial Services Cloud Council, led by Howard Boville, Head of IBM Hybrid Cloud Platform.

SAP Joins IBM Cloud for Financial Services Ecosystem

IBM Cloud for Financial Services established a growing ecosystem of more than 90 ISVs and SaaS providers to help enable financial services organizations integrate offerings from third-party providers and modernize core applications to improve the customer experience. With the addition of SAP, clients can now quickly engage with the largest enterprise app company across their workloads.

IBM will guide ISV and SaaS providers through each step of the onboarding process, which includes a technical and security assessment, workload migration, and readiness validation designed to address third- and fourth-party risk. The IBM Cloud for Financial Services features a control framework designed to help financial institutions reduce expenses and accelerate revenue growth while fostering a secure and compliant partner ecosystem.

This process supports partner compliance initiatives with the IBM Cloud Framework for Financial Services requirements and efficient onboarding through a systematic approach supported by IBM’s technical, security, and regulatory teams.

BNP Paribas Drives Innovation with Ecosystem Partners

Based on IBM Cloud technology, the BNP Paribas-dedicated MZR located in Paris will now be equipped with the security and controls to begin onboarding the bank’s workloads and ecosystem partners to the IBM Cloud for Financial Services. BNP Paribas already migrated more than 40 line-of-business applications to the platform, with plans to speed up the migration for the years coming. BNP Paribas technology partners are also in the process of working with BNP Paribas to initiate the onboarding process in order to develop solutions and transact in a secure environment.

“IBM has been our long-time partner in large part for their knowledge of cloud technology, security, including data encryption, and deep industry expertise associated with banking regulations. We’re collaborating with IBM to establish a BNP Paribas-dedicated cloud that is compatible with all the constraints that are imposed by regulators throughout the world,” said Bernard Gavgani, Global CIO, BNP Paribas.

Celonis, IBM and Red Hat Form Strategic Partnership to Help Transform Business Execution

Global strategic partnership joins execution management with an open, hybrid cloud approach to help drive flexibility and speed for enterprise digital transformation

NEW YORK, MUNICH, ARMONK, N.Y. and RALEIGH, N.C, April 1, 2021 — Celonis, IBM and Red Hat today announced a global strategic partnership to help accelerate the adoption of the Celonis Execution Management System (EMS) and help deliver more flexibility and choice in how customers deploy the technology. The collaboration seeks to accelerate how customers apply process mining, intelligence and automation to the core enterprise system functions and processes that drive business execution.

The strategic partnership aims to help address many challenges business leaders face as they seek to digitally transform their operations. Despite trillions of dollars[1] invested in technologies, solutions, and transformation initiatives, businesses often execute below their full capacity because of system and technology complexity, broken or inefficient processes, and fragmented data that sits across various IT and cloud environments. Celonis EMS sits on top of core enterprise systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning and Customer Relationship Management, pulls real-time data from them, and applies process intelligence in order to help identify and unlock execution capacity across a business.

IBM Global Business Services (GBS) is bolstering its consulting approach by implementing Celonis software as part of its methodology, alongside the application of IBM data and AI solutions. GBS is also helping clients build new solutions using Celonis EMS. Clients across all industries and domains can benefit by accelerating their transformation and re-envisioning work with intelligent workflows. Additionally, Celonis is embracing an open hybrid cloud strategy by re-platforming on Red Hat OpenShift to deliver more flexibility and choice in how customers deploy their technologies.

“Through the strategic partnership with IBM and Red Hat, we plan to help power the shift from analog to intelligent business execution, helping many of the world’s largest companies with their transactional systems, boosting their business performance,” said Miguel Milano, Chief Revenue Officer and co-owner of Celonis. “It’s incredibly powerful for our customers to be able to combine the Celonis Execution Management System with Red Hat OpenShift’s hybrid cloud approach and IBM Global Business Services’ expertise.”

“This strategic partnership accelerates IBM’s billion-dollar partner ecosystem commitment and reflects our bold approach to expanding into high growth, emerging categories to help meet the evolving hybrid cloud and AI needs of our clients,” said Mark Foster, Senior Vice President, IBM Services. “The bottom line is our clients are looking to accelerate the transformation of their  workflows and make them more intelligent. Through this powerful new global strategic partnership with Celonis, we’re adding to IBM’s suite of technology capabilities to unlock value and help propel our clients’ growth and innovation.”

Harnessing value through digital transformation

GBS is bringing deep consulting experience to complement Celonis’ execution management and process mining capabilities to help create intelligent workflows that are more responsive, accurate and predictive. GBS is embedding Celonis software into its services methodologies and is broadly deploying Celonis’ capabilities via 10,000 practitioners throughout its industry and domain practice areas, from consulting and business process outsourcing, to enterprise applications like customer care, to finance and supply chain.

“Working with IBM Global Business Services, we have analyzed our procure to pay processes across several countries in Europe and Africa by applying Celonis process mining tools to uncover and fix inefficiencies. Our finance business processes have benefitted from greater transparency and the identification of tangible improvement areas,” said Jens Knoblauch, Executive Director, Digital Business Services at Linde. “We will need to further develop our operational excellence and can benchmark best practices across all our countries to help each perform their best.”

The strategic partnership between Celonis and IBM GBS will initially focus on:

  • Advanced end-to-end consulting expertise: IBM GBS can deliver skills, capabilities and experience through a center of excellence that can accelerate customer enablement. IBM is integrating Celonis into its consulting work for clients across service line areas like supply chain, finance, procurement, HR, and customer experience including its application modernization work with leading independent software vendors.
  • Embed in IBM Garage: IBM is embedding Celonis intelligent execution management software into its IBM Garage methodology to help deepen workflow analysis and accelerate intelligent workflows for critical processes like production, customer service, distribution, manufacturing and logistics. IBM Garage is a methodology to help collaborate with clients, generate innovative ideas, and turn those ideas into business value, leveraging both IBM and ecosystem technology.
  • Business process outsourcing: IBM GBS is adopting Celonis across many of its business process outsourcing engagements to help them run more efficiently to drive better outcomes for clients.
  • Industry-specific intelligent workflows: IBM GBS is building applications and assets on Celonis EMS for key industries and domains, particularly focused on regulated industries, to help bring actionable data and more intelligent workflows to large enterprises.

A flexible, hybrid cloud platform for deployment

Additionally, Celonis is embracing an open hybrid cloud strategy using Red Hat OpenShift to deliver more flexibility for customers in where they deploy Celonis’ software – across any public or private cloud environment they choose. This flexibility is especially useful in highly regulated industries and enhances Celonis’ interoperability across customers’ existing systems, bringing another level of agility in how critical data can be moved and analyzed to drive new value.

Red Hat OpenShift technology and experience can also enable agility, speed, security and scalability. Celonis is in the process of adopting Red Hat OpenShift across its entire software portfolio.

“The collaboration between our three companies gets at the heart of what we often talk to customers about: how can they transform to enable new innovation and choice while maintaining consistency and the ability to scale,” said Dave Farrell, general manager, Global Strategic Alliances, Red Hat. “Just as Red Hat Enterprise Linux did at the operating system level, Red Hat OpenShift provides a consistent foundation to enable Celonis to deliver its powerful platform across multiple clouds. And by using Managed OpenShift, Celonis can take advantage of the power of the industry’s leading enterprise Kubernetes platform without the complexity of building and managing a Kubernetes environment, enabling them to keep their focus on serving customers and innovating its EMS offerings.”

“With our move to Red Hat OpenShift, we’re offering our customers a new level of flexibility and agility for how they deploy Celonis to help meet their requirements,” said Martin Klenk, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Celonis. “Giving them more choice fits with our belief as a company in living for customer value.”
