IBM and Salesforce Join Forces to Help Organizations and Individuals Verify Vaccine and Health Status

IBM Digital Health Pass and Salesforce Work.com to help businesses, schools and governments as they strive to reopen safely in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic

ARMONK, N.Y. and SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 18, 2020 — IBM and Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) today announced that they are partnering to help organizations as they strive to safely reopen public places and provide individuals with a verifiable and privacy-preserving way to manage and share their vaccination and health status in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of this offering, IBM Digital Health Pass will integrate with the Salesforce Work.com platform.

Integration of the IBM Digital Health Pass with the Salesforce Work.com Workplace Command Center is designed to give organizations a single hub to help make data-driven decisions as they look to minimize risk, take action when needed and communicate effectively, which can help safely bring employees back to offices, visitors back to hotels, concert goers back to music venues and sports fans back to stadiums. With Work.com, organizations are also able to deliver wellness surveys to employees, visitors or travelers, help them schedule necessary COVID-19 tests and vaccinations, and send manual contact tracing alerts if there is potential exposure.

“At the start of the pandemic, many organizations deployed simple COVID-19 screenings, such as self-reported health surveys, to support re-entry to workplaces and other institutions,” said Paul Roma, General Manager, IBM Watson Health. “Now, as testing becomes more widespread and vaccine distribution gets underway, we are expanding the availability of IBM Digital Health Pass with Salesforce to help organizations verify an individual’s vaccine status and any other relevant health credentials.”

“With Covid-19 vaccines becoming available, companies and communities around the world are focused on how to safely reopen and get back to public life,” said Bill Patterson, EVP and GM, CRM Applications at Salesforce. “Our partnership with IBM will give organizations a single platform designed to provide safe and continuous operations, deepen trust with customers and employees and do everything possible to support their health and wellbeing.”

Built on IBM Blockchain technology, the Digital Health Pass is designed to enable organizations to verify health credentials for employees, customers and visitors based on criteria specified by the organization, such as test results, vaccination records, and temperature checks. For example, once a vaccine is administered, an individual would be issued a verifiable health credential via the IBM Digital Health Pass that would be included only in that individual’s encrypted digital wallet on their smartphone. Individuals control what they share, with whom, and for what purpose. Privacy is central to the solution, and the digital wallet can allow individuals to maintain control of their personal health information and share it in a way that is secured, verifiable, and trusted. Individuals can share their health pass without requiring exposure of the underlying personal data used to generate the credential. The solution was developed to be flexible to an organization’s unique needs.

Digital Health Pass is one of a number of solutions that IBM offers to address client needs as vaccine availability scales. Many of these solutions combine hybrid cloud, blockchain, AI and are hardwired with security, to enable governments and businesses to collaborate across complex global networks. For example, IBM’s Vaccine Accountability Network is designed to strengthen trust and accountability at each point of the vaccine supply chain.

IBM has long been a leader in the responsible stewardship of technology and clients’ most valuable data. The IBM Digital Health Pass conforms to the company’s high ethical standards, long-established Principles for Trust and Transparency and guidelines for deployment of technologies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. IBM supports equitable and inclusive application of health passes as well as expansive access to the COVID-19 vaccine and other related healthcare services.

Salesforce Work.com is a suite of solutions and resources already deployed by cities, states and companies around the world to help them reopen safely and support the health and wellbeing of their employees, customers and communities. Work.com includes technology for employee wellness, shift management, manual contact tracing, vaccine management, and more. Salesforce recently introduced Work.com for Vaccines to help governments and healthcare organizations more safely and efficiently manage vaccine programs at scale. With Work.com for Vaccines, customers can design, build, integrate and manage their vaccine programs end-to-end, with a platform that is trusted, flexible and can be deployed quickly. Work.com is built in alignment with Salesforce’s privacy and ethical use guidelines for COVID-19 response to protect users’ data and hold a high bar for ethical and equitable use.

Electrolux and IBM collaborate to use AI to enhance customer experiences

IBM weather API will provide real-time weather and environmental data such as air pollution, humidity, and temperature changes to Electrolux apps

SINGAPORE – Imagine your household appliances being smart enough to read the weather forecast and give you recommendations on the best time to start the dryer because it’s about to rain, or when to turn off the air purifier because the air quality that day is good. A new collaboration between leading global appliance company Electrolux and IBM’s

The Weather Company, a global expert on weather and climate data, has turned this into a reality.

Weather and climate changes can play a role in the usage of household appliances. With the help of The Weather Company, consumers will have the option to make more informed decisions in their households that aim to help them increase energy efficiency and lessen their impact on the environment.

Hyper-localized data on air quality, pollen levels, humidity and temperature will be sent via IBM’s weather data API to Electrolux and used as a basis for smart app recommendations about when to use appliances such as clothes dryers, air purifiers and air conditioners. This added level of information can help consumers make energy-efficient decisions in the APAC and MEA region, where high levels of air pollution, heat and humidity are common.

REDEFINING WEATHER PREDICTIONS

To create a forecast, the team uses AI and analytics to pull weather models together with relevant data sources and arrive at the most accurate forecast, with oversight from an experienced team of meteorologists. That process includes the IBM GRAF (Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecasting) system, a next-generation AI-enabled weather forecasting model, which uses machine learning to rapidly update atmospheric changes hourly and at a 3km resolution. This helps provide consumers improved clarity of weather activity around the globe.

“The Weather Company is the most accurate weather forecaster globally, and IBM GRAF democratizes weather forecasts so people and businesses, virtually anywhere, can make more informed decisions. The work we are doing here with Electrolux is the tip of the iceberg in what we can achieve with this technology,” said Martin Chee, Managing Director, IBM Singapore.

The Weather Company not only provides weather predictions to help communities brace for upcoming weather conditions but also enables industries such as retail, energy and utilities, agriculture, insurance, aviation and more to leverage data to help them enhance their customer experiences.

LIVING WITH A CONNECTED ECOSYSTEM

These real-time, geo-targeted weather predictions will be made available through the Electrolux Life App. Users will be prompted to use their clothes dryer when rain is forecasted or when the air quality is not acceptable for air-drying. Similarly, the application recommends not to use the dryer when the outdoor weather is optimal for air-drying, thus saving energy.

The app can also control other inputs for appliances, such as the humidity control for air conditioners and accurate readings of indoor and outdoor weather to inform the use of air purifiers. The use of multiple Electrolux appliances benefits from access not just to accurate weather forecasts but also to environmental factors such as air quality, pollen, pollution and more.

IT’S A BREEZE TO USE

“Through extensive consumer-focused workshops with IBM’s The Weather Company, we found simple technology integrations that best help us live out our Better Living promise to consumers,” said Gaurav Julka, Senior Manager for Connectivity at Electrolux, APAC & MEA. “Having cutting-edge weather insights means that consumers can enjoy recommendations about their connected appliances tailored specifically and uniquely to where they live. In this way, we also help environmentally-conscious consumers to save energy and make more informed decisions.”

The Electrolux Life App is currently accessible on Android and iOS in Australia & New Zealand, South East Asia and North East Asia, excluding China. Supported languages include English, Thai, Vietnamese, Traditional Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia and Korean.

To date, there have been more than 50,000 downloads in APAC. The weather data will be introduced incrementally as new connected appliances are added to the Electrolux Life App.

IBM Cloud Delivers Quantum-Safe Cryptography and Hyper Protect Crypto Services to Help Protect Data in the Hybrid Era

IBM brings hybrid cloud leadership together with quantum and security research expertise to stay at the forefront of quantum cybersecurity

ARMONK, N.Y., Nov. 30, 2020 — IBM today announced a series of cloud services and technologies designed to help clients maintain the highest available level of cryptographic key encryption protection to help protect existing data in the cloud1 and prepare for future threats that could evolve with advances in quantum computing. Pioneered by IBM Research scientists, the company is now offering quantum-safe cryptography support for key management and application transactions in IBM Cloud®, making it the industry’s most holistic quantum-safe cryptography approach to securing data available today.

The new capabilities include:

  • Quantum Safe Cryptography Support: Through the use of open standards and open source technology, this service enhances the standards used to transmit data between enterprise and Cloud, helping to secure data by using a quantum-safe algorithm.
  • Extended IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Crypto Services: New capabilities are available to enhance privacy of data in cloud applications, where data sent over the network to cloud applications and sensitive data elements like credit card numbers, are stored in a database that can be encrypted at application-level – supported by the industry’s highest level of cryptographic key encryption protection with ‘Keep Your Own Key’ (KYOK) capability.

“As our reliance on data grows in the era of hybrid cloud and quantum computing capabilities advance, the need for data privacy is becoming even more critical. IBM now offers the most holistic quantum-safe approach to securing data available today and to help enterprises protect existing data and help protect against future threats,” said Hillery Hunter, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, IBM Cloud. “Security and compliance remain front and center for IBM Cloud as we continue to invest in confidential computing and our leading encryption capabilities to help enterprises of all kinds – especially those in highly regulated industries – keep data secured.”

Preparing for future threats with Quantum-Safe Cryptography Support
While quantum computing aims to solve complex problems even the world’s most powerful supercomputers cannot solve, future fault-tolerant quantum computers could pose potential risks, such as the ability to quickly break encryption algorithms and access sensitive data. To mitigate these risks IBM has developed a clear strategic agenda to help protect the long term security of our platforms and services. This agenda includes the research, development and standardization of core quantum-safe cryptography algorithms as open source tools such as CRYSTALS and OpenQuantumSafe. It also includes the governance, tools and technology to support our clients as they start on the same journey to a more secure future.

Today, as the next step in that agenda, IBM is bringing its industry-leading encryption capabilities built by IBM Research cryptographers to help clients with a quantum-safe cryptography approach for their data-in-transit within IBM Cloud. The capabilities are designed to help enterprises prepare for future threats and can be useful against attacks in which malicious actors harvest encrypted data today with the intent to decrypt it later as quantum computing advances.

IBM Key Protect, a cloud-based service that provides lifecycle management for encryption keys that are used in IBM Cloud services or client-built applications, has now introduced the ability to use a quantum-safe cryptography enabled Transport Layer Security (TLS) connection – helping to protect data during the key lifecycle management.

In addition, IBM Cloud is also introducing quantum-safe cryptography support capabilities to enable application transactions. When cloud native containerized applications run on Red Hat® OpenShift® on IBM Cloud or IBM Cloud Kubernetes Services, secured TLS connections can help application transactions with quantum-safe cryptography support during data-in-transit and protect from potential breaches.

Protecting sensitive data with IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Crypto Services
Enterprises also need to mitigate risks from external and internal threats, as well as to address regulatory compliance.

Today, IBM Cloud is also delivering new capabilities to help secure application transactions and sensitive data using IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Crypto Services, which offer the industry’s highest level of cryptographic key encryption protection by providing customers with ‘Keep Your Own Key’ (KYOK) capability. Built on FIPS-140-2 Level 4-certified hardware – the highest level of security offered by any cloud provider in the industry for cryptographic modules2 – this allows clients to have exclusive key control, and therefore authority over the data and workloads protected by the keys.

Designed for application transactions where there is a deeper need for more advanced cryptography, IBM Cloud clients can keep their private keys secured within the cloud hardware security module while offloading TLS to IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Crypto Services to help establish a secure connection to the web server. They can also achieve application-level encryption of sensitive data, such as a credit card number, before it gets stored in a database system.

Continuing to address the security demands of clients and highly regulated industries
IBM has been investing in confidential computing technologies for over a decade and today delivers production-ready confidential computing to help clients protect data, applications and processes.

Furthering its commitment to security and compliance, IBM continues to collaborate with its industry peers to make further progress in standardization initiatives. For example, security best practices on IBM Cloud are now available as a Center for Internet Security (CIS) Foundations benchmark for IBM Cloud, and IBM Research cryptographers are key contributors to the QSC algorithms that are short listed in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
